CASTROL EDGE D1NZ NATIONAL DRIFTING CHAMPIONSHIP 2009

CASTROL EDGE D1NZ TAUPO ROUND 4 WRAP UP

 Kia ora all

What an awesome weekend in Taupo as The Castrol Edge D1NZ National Drifting Championship rolled into Round 4. She was a tight Championship leading in with both the D1NZ and D1 Rookie Championship close amongst the top players.

Ambushed by torrential rain, it made an interesting track with Drifting almost turning into Drift Kayaking as Taupo Motorsport Park became a river down the main straight. However, the field of 45 Drifters weren’t deterred and battled on. Throughout Friday, the D1 Rookies qualified hard with a few newcomers into the field including round winner Mark Burling in his interesting powered VR4. Mark in his essence, in the wet and slippery conditions coming from a Rally background powered through the Friday to make the Top 8 on the Saturday.

Rookie Qualifiers:

1st - Drew Donavan (green S13;5.80)

2nd - Micah Hoebers (red C33; 5.60)

3rd – Richard Gray (brown S13; 4.83)

4th – Nico Reid (black S13; 4.80)

5th – Mark Burling (VR4; 4.50)

6th – Brandon Rodgerson (grey 180sx; 4.36)

7th – Marcus Davies-King (red S14; 4.25)

8th – Randle champane (R32; 4.19) Drew Donavan Micah Hoebers Richard Grey

9th – Mark Brent (green FC RX7; 3.80)

10th – Kurt Holland (white S15; 3.78)

11th – Ryan Johnson (dark purple S13; 3.64)

12th – Phill Otene (gold S14; 3.50)

13th – Marnix Hoebers (red S14; 3.33)

14th – Dwayne Rhind (black C33; 3.25)

15th – Sky (orange R33; 3.09)

16th – Nate Steel (black S14; 2.50)

Drew Donovan (also with his first Rookie appearance) was tested by the D1NZ staff to see his skills in both fields. Other stand outs over the day were Micah Hoebers, Nico Reid and Richard Gray coming into the battles the field saw the following runs:

After some very wet river Drifting, the Top 8 were ready for Saturday’s Championship day – huge props to all the D1 Rookies for their persistence on such out of control weather and undesirable conditions. The D1NZ and D1Rookies didn’t let the torrential rain deter them in their efforts and kept the limiters and wastegates on until the tracked closed.

Micah Hoebers in his C33 Laurel - currently now 2nd in The Rookie Championship after Taupo

Saturday rolled out and the weather for Taupo Motorsport Park wasn’t showing any promise of letting up. A very wet morning made some hard qualifying conditions for the D1NZ Championship drivers and the Top 8 Rookies were dealt a huge downpour right before the sky’s cleared to let it dry out for the D1NZ battles.

The D1 Rookie Top 8 battles saw some great synchronized Drifting from a field that has developed heavily over the season - this is how the Top 8 for rookies played out:

After the Rookies battled it out with some exceptional Drifting from underdogs Mark Burling and Drew Donovan, the final was set between Mark Burling and Brandon Rogerson. Sitting with the judges proved how hard the job at hand is for these boys as both displayed outstanding skills at sideways action with their own defaults on both runs. Unfortunately, the inexperience and pressure let Brandon Rogerson spin handing the victory to Mark on the rerun.

This brought us to the Top Drifters in NZ ready for action on the grid waiting to be let out for their parade lap

A huge effort from Jason Sellers and Andrew Redward which saw them take the two top spots followed closely by Daynom Templman and Gaz Whiter. After the parade lap, what unfolded was some of the interesting battles I have witnessed to date - a mixture of reruns, protests and mechanical failures would shape the winning results to make way for one of NZ’s closest grand finals to date.

D1NZ Qualifiers
1st - Jason Sellers 8.00
2nd - Andrew Redward 7.44

Whiddett def Redward 4-6_7-3

A controversial battle, Andrew Redward with a solid run on his chase giving him the advantage 6-4. Mad Mike losing 4th gear managed to pull off a exceptional chase on the second battle, with judges unable to see him so close tucked into Andrew’s S14 80% of the time giving Mike an advantage over Andrew on the 2nd battle moving him through to top 8 with only 4th gear.
